Members, This is a "Vote for Me for Wes and Shelly F. of Michigan. Their Project is: #119 The Kindergarten Classroom Furnishing project.
Shelly from MI
As a teacher new to a kindergarten classroom full of old rickety hand-me-down furnishings, I needed help. The school budget could not pay for all new furniture. The classroom had fairly nice student tables and chairs, but there were no funds to purchase additional furnishings. The purpose of our project was to fully furnish the kindergarten classroom with needed extra furnishings above and beyond the students\'s tables and chairs. My husband and I browsed the expensive school supply catalogs and based upon the photos in the catalogs, we designed several wood projects. We salvaged some wood and hardware from a few pieces of old dilapidated school furniture and used some oak that we had cut and planed ourselves. We built several items including a white board easel, a big book cart,
a book display rack, several shelving units, mailboxes, a light table, and a workbench (the children\'s favorite).
Young children\'s needs, a small budget and browsing through expensive school supply catalogs inspired me! There was a need for quality furnishings that would withstand the use of hundreds of children over the years. I felt the children deserved to have a classroom with nice, sturdy items like I had seen in the catalogs. I wanted to provide a learning environment that would inspire them.
I taught in that classroom with those furnishings for nine wonderful years. The classroom set-up was amazing. We had high-quality, functional and safe furnishings with ample storage. When I left that school for a different job, other teachers were laying claims on the furniture I left behind! The furnishings we built are still in use today and holding up well.
To Date, this is the only entry to my knowledge from a ST member.
