What do you do with gifts you don't want to keep for yourself

I've been entering sweeps to win make-up and girly stuff hoping to win nice Christmas gifts and I'm sure that's allowable but what about movie tickets?  Can I send them to one of the kids to use?

How about a big win?  Say you entered hoping for the tv but you won a grill and you had just bought one for yourself.  Are you allowed to sell it on EBay?

How about my Tim Gunn bobblehead doll?  hehehe

Oh maybe I should have mentioned that I have 9 granddaughters and would like to give them something nice - but not pay for it

    Hi el3btrs

Some of the stuff I've won I give away as gifts, donate to charities or sell on craiglist. The prizes have also come in handy as last minute gifts like a house warming or for a neighbor as a token of appreciation for cat sitting etc..

Don't know what the ettiquette would be on this kind of gift giving? Is it considered a re-gifting faux pas? Does it show a lack of thought?

Anyway if this is the case, then I've broken all those rules. I figure a gift is a gift. Those prizes have helped me out on a last minute occassion. Why not give it to some who will enjoy it more.

     P.S. Love bobbleheads

I guess on second look at these movie tickets for High School Musical 3 I have to keep them because my name is on them.  Too bad, my granddaughter in Texas would appreciate them so much more.

    Hi el,

I have read posts where sweepers here have stashed prizes with the idea of gift gving for birthdays and the holidays so I do not think it is such an out there idea.  Last year I utilized gift codes I had won to select gifts for my family.

Am also guilty of taking all the random prizes I have won and cannot use (i.e. tshirts that are the wrong size for my family, duplicate prizes etc.) and am saving them for prizes in an upcoming family bingo game we are planning.  Win a bingo, pick a prize off the table.  A truly inexpensive way to spend time with my huge family and share the perks of my sweeping efforts.  And considering the prizes range from anything to a diamond necklace to power tools, it should be well received too.

Never won theater tix, Just football tix's.  Not sure how that would work.  I don't think the theater would ask for ID from your grand daughter & friends . She might still be able to use the tix, Unless it's a deal where you would have to be physically present & provide your ID with 2 guests.

I know a few members have won movie/theater tickets, so maybe one of those members could provide a better answer.

The Football tickets I won were part of a larger prize package where Affies had to  be signed so this was an entirely different deal.

I have won 9 movie tickets in the last few months and they all had my name on them but I gave them to my sister and her husband to use.  She said that they had no trouble using them.  nobody asked her for an ID and nor did they care what movie she used them on

I certainly hope passing them on as a "gift" isn't a Miss Manners etiquette faux pas, as often, when I enter a sweep for a particular pize and end up winning one of the lesser prizes I have passed them on, or saved to be passed on as special occasion gift (birthday, Christmas, etc) Barnes & Noble GC to book reading daughter, iTunes GC to granddaughter, FYE and Home Depot GC's to son-in-law, quarterly gift of year's supply of almonds to LW, so that every three months when she receieve those nuts, she immediately thinks of me. I find this helps with budget, and I know it is items they can and do use. I don't mention they are items that I have won. Re: Tickets, I have won all types of tickets, and often are passed on to others, Some are picked up directly from issuer, using a home printer copy of my driver's license as proof of winner. Such a DL copy could be given to your granddaughter with the HS Musical tickets and she could explain to theatre personnel, her dear old decrepit nanny's joints were aching, and that she had passed the tickets on.

I won on that sweep as well, and the tickets actually say that you can use them on ANY disney or touchstone film.  You don't just have to go see High School Musical 3.

Re: What do you do with gifts you don't want to keep for yourself

I checked further and discovered I had to go to a particular theatre and when I checked, would require quite a drive.  Since they are good until 1/09, maybe when I see her at Christmas I can take her myself.

I love the family "awards" idea and was thinking of something similar.  We used to all get a little present from a bag.  Each person going around the circle would open their gift and keep it or take some one else's gift.  Since these were tacky little things it would get to be very funny to have three or four people wanting the $1 screwdriver kit!  The first person gets to make the last pick since they didn't have any choices at the start.  WAIT A MINUTE.... I just figured out what to do with my bobblehead doll.  Angel

Now how about selling stuff on Ebay?  Is it legal?  Are there any rules against it?

I use my prizes as I want:  for self, for family, for friends, for charity, to generate some extra income for service members, whatever.  Whether I won it or purchased it, a gift is a gift.

How you look at a situation is very important, for how you think about a problem may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. When you get discouraged or depressed, try changing your attitude from negative to positive and see how life can change for you. Remember, your attitude toward a situation can help you to change it -- you create the very atmosphere for defeat or victory.”

I ditto what marli23514 said. Another thing I do, is if I'm not interested in a sweep prize, but I know a family member will be, then I enter their name and addy instead of mine.

Re: What do you do with gifts you don't want to keep for yourself

As far as giving away or selling prizes, I don't see anything wrong with it.  Once it's yours, it's yours to do with as you wish (as long as there are no stipulations saying that you can't).  I feel that I am blessing someone with something they can use and I cannot.  For example, I gave 4 Sesame Place tickets that I won to my son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter as they were only about 1 hour away from there.  They went yesterday, had a great time & they in turn gave one of the tickets to someone standing in line who didn't have a one.  Pay it forward!!

And yes, I have sold some items on eBay. They were things that no one close to me could or would use, so by selling them, it enabled me to get some benefit from them and someone who did need/want them also got a good deal. If you still don't feel right about selling them, there are plenty of charities out there who would love to have some nice items to either give to someone in need or sell themselves (i.e., auctions, raffles, etc).  Doing anything with them is better than letting them sit around to collect dust or be wasted (such as tickets).

By the same token, if there is a sweeps that has ONLY prizes that I cannot use or give to someone who can, I just skip them.

Just my opinion - hope this helps!

You paid for these prizes, el3btrs. Your time is just as valuable as money, and we know how much time it takes. :)

And the items are yours, and it is totally legal to sell something that YOU own.
