What's the hook to this phone scam?

I received a phone call last weekend that I knew was fishy, but I tried to play along for a little while to see what kind of scam they were running. I still can't figure it out. The call originated from a foreign call center -sounded like India. The guy told me that my number had been selected to receive a $25 WalMart gift card and a $25 gas card. He already had my name, address, and obviously phone #. He asked me to confirm that I was over 18. He could not provide a logical explanation of how he had all of my info. He asked me to write down his company name and a reference # to "claim" the gift cards. After this he told me that since the cards were being sent "all the way from California" (LOL) that they would ask me to pay a couple of dollars for shipping after I got the cards. This was as far as I entertained the call, but it's still bugging me. What's the catch? Do they ask for a credit card number to pay shipping? Do they sign you up for a club or subscription? Anyone else out there ever tried this?

IT'S  A  SCAM!!!!!!   Anytime you have to pay a fee, it is not a prize (unless of course, it's value is over $599. then you have to pay taxes). In all liklihood, they would ask for a credit card number.  For your info, all he needed was your local phone book, or, believe it or not, many local tax offices, sell taxpayer lists, which again probably have all the data you named. AS far as the call being from India, it could have from anywhere, computer saavy people can do magic with PC's and/or phones.

You have to send them money before they give you the numbers to activate your giftcards , which of course are not loaded with the money .Therefore they made money ripping u off

Another scammer scamming.  We never, ever give our credit card number to these scam artists.

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. - Dr. Seuss
