Dana! You sure took your time posting on this thread - I think I heard from Superman before you! LOL Oh, that's right - I remember reading about your (in)famous sense of time... You probably think you're answering a post I'll be writing next week!
But to continue your thought about TVs and muting: I always used to mute the commercials when I was married, and my wife grudgingly went along with it for two reasons. She was usually reading magazines or talking on the phone when we were watching TV "together"; and I had the remote! (Yes - it's a Male Thing! And in my case an OCD thing, too!) OH-HO! But now that I live alone, with total control over the TV, I also have a DVR as part of my Dish HD package. HOLD THE PHONE!! Now I record all my favorite shows - even my races - and FAST FORWARD through all the commercials! Better than muting! If I accidentally catch up to live TV while watching a show, I'm bummed! HA HA! I just wish I could skip the commercial block with one click... or better yet, have the DVR not even record the commercials!! I'm so habituated to this behavior that if I watch TV at my sister's house, I mute the commercials (on live TV). AND SHE OBJECTS! She and her family "talk" over the loud commercials, fighting to be heard! I just don't understand that - but it's probably more of a deal where I'm coming into their house and "taking over" the TV... Talk about being spoiled by technology - I'll never give up watching TV and skipping the commercials! You'll have to pry the remote from my cold, dead fingers! Cheers and happy muting, Chuck. P.S. After re-reading your post, I picked up on your comment about modern muting not being instantaneous. YES! When I was married the remote would mute completely with one click - but my remote now mutes in two steps! What a dubious "improvement" - and another reason to record and fast-forward.
