    update on my granddaughter

We're back from NJ.  Really tired but glad we went, of course.  Melilla is doing well.  The results from the spinal tap on Wednesday were good - only 1% of cells were cancerous so she won't have to undergo another one until she's ready to leave the hospital.  They were waiting until her white blood cell count was built back up to over 100.  Today it was 130 - amazing considering that earlier in the week they were at 0.  She will probably be in the hospital another week or so, then they'll be taking her back for outpatient treatments.  Fortunately, they will be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House during that time.  Once she's able to travel, there is a possibility they will move back to Fort Meyers.  There is a COG hospital there and an emergency room right across the street from where they would be staying.  If she gets even a slight fever within the next 3 years, they'll have to get her to a dr ASAP.

She had a really good day on Thursday - full of energy and talking a mile a minute!  She wants her Mommy there 24/7 and that is wearing down my DIL Emilie.  Emilie does go over to the Ronald McDonald House for 2-3 hours a day to shower and nap but if Melilla needs to go potty, she throws a fit until Emilie gets back.  She's not normally a fit-thrower, but the meds tend to make her that way.

Thank you for all your concern, prayers and support.  It is going to be a long haul but we are keeping a positive outlook for a positive outcome.

I am very happy to hear the good news on your grandaughter!! May God continue to watch over all of you! I am blessed that my newborn grandaughter, born 1/17, has finally come home yesterday, so He has been taking care of us as well! :) May she continue to do well, and hopefully be found free of all disease soon!

    Re: update on my granddaughter

I am really happy for you and your entire family. I lost my husband two weeks ago tomorrow to cancer. He had survived for 21 years with a rare type of cancer that there is no cure for and no one thought that he would make it 5 years but I still never thought that he would go.  Being a caregiver with no other help was one of the hardest things that I have ever done, but I wouldn't give up a minute that I spent with him, but I do know how your daughter feels.  I hope she has someone who can help her out so that she can get some rest.  They have made so many break throughs and continue to everyday. I will pray for her as well as the rest of your family.  Cancer eats away at the entire family whether we want it to or not and I can not imagine having to watch a child go through the things that they put my husband through.  But until the last thirteen months I will say that as hard as the treatments are they are just as easy to bounch back from. I know that I should leave it at that, but I feel the need to tell you one more thing and that is if your daughter feels that there is anything that is not normal no matter how small it may be, have her get it checked out and if she isn't happy with the answer she gets tell her to get another opinion and another if needed.  I only say this because we had so many mistakes made in my husbands case and not only once or even by the same doctor or same hospital.  You would be surprised how many times tests are not performed and biopsys are not sent to the labs. I am not trying to scare you, but as a doctor who made a mistake once told me it is your body and when you know something is wrong do not ever let anyone tell you it isn't.  That being said I pray for a long, healthy, happy life for you all and that you will be able to enjoy and cherish every day of every year for a very very long time. God Bless

Thank you for keeping us posted on how Melilla is doing.  It is good to hear how our prayers are being answered.  I can understand how Emilie must be feeling exhausted.  At least she doesn't have to feel discouraged, too.  I stayed at the R. McDonald House in Cleveland with my daughter years ago.  What a great place of support and comfort.  You meet the nicest people who are going through the "same" trials that you are experiencing and you don't feel so alone. I will continue to keep Melilla and her family and drs. in my prayers.

Donna, I am so sorry for your loss.  I can't imagine lossing my husband.  I will pray for your strength and peace to be renewed.  21 years is a long time to be awaiting for the other shoe to drop and I can understand your thinking it wouldn't happen after all that time.  How old was he, may I ask?  God Bless you.

suzq, He was only 55, but on the inside I always said he was around 18 because he never grew up I mean he was responsible but he was just fun loving and would spend all day playing in the yard with our sons and all the neighbor kids.  At his funeral the thing most people said that they remembered about him was that you can grow old and still have fun.  He filled our life with love and laughter and taught our sons the values in life. I will have a hole in my heart forever, but I have two wonderful sons, even though they are grown, they still need their mother, so I have to go on. Just some days are harder than others and today is a bad one (superbowl) but my bright spot is my sweeps.

donna, it sounds like he was a perfect example of how to live and enjoy life.  You were blessed to have found him out of all the other guys out there to marry.  Lucky you!  Gee, I'm 55.  Much to young to leave.
