Do some sweeps regulate what the money is toward?

This may be a dumb question, but I am new here.  I entered a sweepstakes added today called Right@Home-Clean Start Sweepstakes in which the grand prize is:   $5,000 awarded in the form of a check made payable to the winner to purchase an energy-efficient washer and dryer of winner's choice.  If they are going to give me a $5000.00 check, can they regulate how I spend it or does this work different then I think?  I was just not sure how this work.  I have seen several sweeps that state they are giving you a check so the money can go towards whatever they are promoting.  Please Advise.  Thanks.....TLS

Welcome to the best sweepstakes site.

Rules rule: so go back to them.  Watch for qualifying words like "may or can be used."  Also watch for words like "must" as that may limit options.  Hope this helps provide an answer.

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. - Dr. Seuss

I have wondered this same thing.  Sometimes they say the prize will be awarded in the form of a check which "may" be used to purchase...  But sometimes, as in your example, they seem pretty specific.  It's hard to believe a washer and dryer would cost $5,000 -- Might pay that much though if they folded, ironed and hung the clothes too. :-)

I wrote to DIY once when they were having a $100,000 garage makeover sweepstake and asked them if I won, would the money have to be spent on my garage.  They said no, I could use it anyway I chose.  I wanted to make sure before I took the time to enter, as there is no way I would want to spend $100,000 on my garage.

I too will be interested in how other sweepers intrepret these rules or experiences they have had with similar sweeps.

Not a dumb question. I won $1080 from Sony. I think it stated "may be used for purchase of flat panel tv". It's a check. I splurged a little and paid bills with the rest. Would've liked the tv but I had more pressing needs.
