Ok, I called SS today. If you are on SSD, your winnings have no effect on your benefits. You can win the lottery for 1,000,000. and it will not effect anything! If you collect SSI, however, it will be affected because that goes by your net worth. It MAY affect medicare, depending on how much you win. Medicare premiums are determined by your income, so you wouldn't lose Medicare, you just may have to pay a higher premium. I didn't call Social Services but I believe Medicaid is like SSI in that it goes by your net worth.
A question has come up regarding SSD work trial periods. I'll just repeat what I was told by the SS office: a trial period is 9 months. You begin a trial period anytime you go to work and any month your gross income is $670 or more is counted as part of the 9 months. Any month your gross income is $940 or more you will not collect benefits, FOR THAT MONTH ALONE. After this trial period of 9 months, if you are still disabled, for 36 months you are still able to receive a check for any month your income falls below the $940. I have been fortunate enough to have been able to go back to work for the last 6 1/2 years without losing anything. They still send me and my dr.'s forms every 18 months or so to determine whether or not I am still physically disabled, but my income has never been an issue because the school district I work for is too cheap to pay us a living wage, which SSD says is $940 a month. (I'd like to see anybody actually live on that amount of money! Figure in taxes, housing, utilities, food, clothing, transportation, medical insurance and prescriptions, co-pays for drs., etc...Not do-able! Thank God I'm married and my husband works.)
I diverse. What it all comes down to is that if you receive SS Disability for yourself or your child, Win To Your Hearts Content!!!!! I wish you big prizes, lots of smiles, and no more worries about whether you can afford to sweep or not!
