I have seen a prize I would buy from someone, but seriously...why would I send a couple of hundred dollars out and trust that I will get something in return? Do any of you actually do this? What sort of experiences have you had if so?

If you aren't sure, maybe you could use Paypal.  That is a convenient way to purchase something and may provide you with a greater sense of security. 

I have exchanged GCs with several members and had a very positive experience each time.  I have not purchased anything from another member.

One member gave me their Cinemark GC (no places that accepted it in their area) and I offered something in return.  They insisted that they did not want anything in return.

 i have not had any bad experiences with any ST member.  But I stay away from PayPal like crazy....very bad experience with them, and impsoibe to get off their lists.

I have bought a few things from persons selling their winnings and have not had a bad experience, and i thank them everyday, because we couldn't have afforded them any other way,the samething with swapagift.com had a 50.00 jumba juice G.C sitting here and couldn't use it sent it to them and in a week recieved a 30.00 check.
