    Going to miss my Daddy

I just wanted to introduce myself and tell everyone why I am here.  My father has been sweeping (his term for it was "contesting" even though he entered sweepstakes exclusively) since probably the 1970s.  I first knew about it when he began subscribing to Contest Newsletter when I was a boy growing up in Blythe, Georgia.

He would sit and fill out 3x5 cards, licks stamps, etc. and the family thought he was nuts.  He would occasionally win something small, and was always trying to get me involved (going so far as to order me a subscription to Contest Newsletter one year for my birthday when I was older).

A few years ago he won a 2005 Chevy Equinox.  That was his biggest win ever.

On September 12th, 2009 we found out that my dad has terminal brain cancer with about a month to live (he's beaten their estimate a bit so far).  I began doing the sweeps for him, sitting at the computer beside his bed.  He still encouraged me to "start contesting".  After doing it for him a while I began thinking that this would be the way to honor my daddy, to take up this "corny" little hobby of his (and maybe win something).  (My wife and I have 3 daughters.  Winning would be very nice.)

Dad's still with us, and so far I've won some hardwood floor cleaner from Shaw and a $10 BP gas card.  Dad is quite proud.

    Good luck, everyone!

Your story is very touching.  You are a good and caring son.  I wish the best for you and your family.  And as you continue your dad's "corny little hobby" I hope you win a wonderful prize; you would certainly be deserving.

If anyone "deserves" a huge win I'd say it is you for your devotion to your dad.

Spend as much time as you can with him and keep up the sweeping because you will be blessed in so many ways. Your father is lucky to have you and he might have a "corny hobby" but he did have his BIG win! I will say a prayer for you and your father that his remaining days are free of pain and suffering. God Bless!!
Be persistant, enter daily and you will have many days of happy sweeping!

Thank y'all very much for the kind words and prayers. Dad had several seizures Wednesday and has been in the hospital since.  I've been spending nights (and days) with him.  Currently he's sleeping peacefully and I'm at his side.  He sure is a good ole guy.  Again, thank y'all.  It's nice to see other kind-hearted people share his hobby.

My father died a dozen years ago but he was always entering contests  even before I was born and I'm 55. He was always winning small items but back then one had to fill out forms, lick stamps etc. I just know he would love SweepstakesToday. He was keen on raffles as well and about 25 years ago he won a Cadillac two years in a row. He did have to sell them but a wins a win. People say I take after my Daddy and it must be true because I sure do like entering Sweepstakes.

What a sweet dad you have, to give you such a great gift as a hobby. I can imagine all the fun times he had with this, and what fun you must have had seeing him win. Every time you win something, you will always think about your dad and how proud he will be up in Heaven looking down at your smile.

What a great story....your Daddy is giving you a gift, which may really mean something down the road...  I am sure you are letting  him know how much you appreciate his knowledge and everything he has done for you.   You can tell him some of the stories and comments you read in the Forum, some of which will make him laugh!  You can tell him about the hardwood floor cleaner, and maybe sometime you will even have hardwood floors!!.  Yes, this is a great way to honor your Daddy and any win you have will be due to his lessons to you.  Best wishes to you and Daddy..  Tell him you are both in our thoughts and prayers during this time.   Evie

I'm so sorry to read about your Dad.  He sounds like a wonderful father, who has a very caring son. . . God bless you.  My dad passed away this past June.  He never actually entered any contest- - -just like several people already mentioned, we had to mail in entries- - but, if he heard or saw one that offered (big) money as the prize- - he would always do the following:  Take out paper and pencil and actually divide out and write down who among all of his family would get what amount.  Then, he would  make the comment that he just wished that he REALLY had that much money to give us.  Parents give us so much more than material things.  Stay strong.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I lost my husband to brain cancer about 8 years ago, so I know 1st hand what it's like. It's a horrible thing to go through. I'll keep you & your family in my prayers. It's nice that your dad got to see you enjoying his hobby-it's something special the 2 of you can share in his final days.

    Hang in there,
