Received a check for $4,000 from Center for Genetics, Nutrition & Health. It is a real check. Drawn from a Wachovia account. Did we have any sweepstakes for this amount from a company like that. They are in DC....

 Normally if it is from a win, one would expect to fill out papework for tax liability. I would doubt you would get

a check from a sweep with no prior notification on the amount that you recieved. Anything over $600 is subject

to taxes and a 1099 would be issued for the following tax year. 

I have been doing a search,for that name and can't find any thing so i would be careful,my aunt breeds german shepards and had some one send her a check for more than the amount of the price for the puppy she was selling,but she knew what was going on they just wanted the number on the back of the check..i hope you can find out more about what's going on..

I would not cash the check.  Did you check the returned address? With that amount you should at least get a letter explaining the check.  I would be very careful.

Unfortunately, that sounds too good to be true... and you know what they say about that! I agree - you would have received some other official paperwork for a prize that large. Be careful!

Do not deposit check in your account.  Take check directly to a Wachovia location and try to cash it.  They will quickly determine if check is good.

Center for Genetics, Nutrition & Health can be googled.  Contact them and ask why you received the check.

Hey Gargoyle,  I spent some time trying to track this sweep down.  I couldn't find it on ST or even on Google in over 10 different searches. So I am baffled.  They could be a silent partner is a sweep but this is rare. Likely they are listed under a completely different name and is why I don't see it. However I should have seen this on Google. 

Is there any notation on the check about how you can spend it or any restrictions? IE.. Those auto dealers type checks you can use for a downpayment or discount?

Other than that, I agree with the comment about going to Wachovia about the check.

 It is a regular check..has security features warning and also the document thing on the back...the address on the check matches the address for the company online...also has the lock symbol and the federalbank statement on the back as well as a list of all the security features to look for..the check is hand written..the name on the check matches the sender..has a real stamp on it....I am going to Wachovia tomorrow...if they cash it..I will deposit into my own bank account....thanks for all the help.....this should put me close to the 10k club :)

I have heard about these checks if you try and deposit the check that scam artist can wipe out your entir account take it Wachovia and they will tell you whether it is fake or not.  Usually the font iis off on these checks and the amount looks funny I recieved one for 2000 not to long ago.

you said that it had a real stamp?  Does this mean it arrived by USPS.  This would be a key to scam or not. 

I received a similar check from UPS, and ended up finding out that it was fraudulant written on a closed account.

Otherwise looked perfect, but nothing could be done because it was not mailed, it was "shipped".

Hi Gargoyle, thanks for the additional information.  You might do a Google search on the company's address on the check.

 It was fake but it took the teller a while to figure it oiut..They said it looked real to..

How disappointing!

Had this same thing happen to a friend....she contacted the Attorney General's Office.  They said that if she had cashed the check, she would have been responsible for the scam for that amount.....
